Hiring activity related to metaverse increased by a CAGR of 3% in the medical devices industry since 2020

The global medical devices industry witnessed a 3% rise in compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in new job postings related to metaverse since 2020, according to GlobalData's Job Analytics database. New job postings increased by 38% year-on-year in 2021 and decreased by 22% year-on-year in 2022.

Notably, management occupations jobs accounted for 29% share of the global medical devices industry’s metaverse-related new job postings since 2020.

Management occupations drive metaverse-related hiring activity

Management occupations, with a share of 29%, emerged as the top metaverse-related job roles within the medical devices industry since 2020, with new job postings rising by 29% year-on-year in 2021 and by 19% year-on-year in 2022.

Computer and mathematical occupations came in second with a share of 25%, with new job postings rising by 62% year-on-year in 2021 and decreasing by 17% year-on-year in 2022.

The other prominent metaverse roles include business and financial operations occupations (13% share), and architecture and engineering occupations (10% share). 

The top five companies in the medical devices industry accounted for 54% of hiring activity

The top five companies, in terms of the number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, since 2020 were Thermo Fisher Scientific, Medtronic, Danaher, Siemens Healthineers, and Koninklijke Philips. Together they accounted for a combined share of 54% of all metaverse-related new jobs in the medical devices industry.

Thermo Fisher Scientific posted 183 metaverse-related jobs since 2020, followed by Medtronic with 168 jobs, and Danaher with 91 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database.

New job postings by Thermo Fisher Scientific increased by 94% year-on-year in 2021 and decreased by 77% year-on-year in 2022, while those by Medtronic increased by 116% in 2021 and decreased by 69% in 2022.

Hiring activity was driven by the US with a 53% share of total new job postings since 2020

The largest share of metaverse-related new job postings in the medical devices industry since 2020 was in the US with 59%, followed by Germany (6%) and the UK (5%). The share represented by the US decreased by two percentage points from 62% in 2021 to 60% in 2022.
