JPM26: Eli Lilly and NVIDIA deepen ties with $1bn AI partnership
Eli Lilly and NVIDIA will establish a new artificial intelligence (AI) co-innovation lab, as the companies look to use each other’s expertise to advance drug development. The lab, which will be based in the San Francisco Bay area, will see the US drugmaker and tech giant jointly invest up to $1bn over five years to level-up drug discovery. The partnership was announced at the 2026 J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, held from 12 to 15 January in San Francisco.
Smith+Nephew to buy Integrity Orthopaedics for up to $450m
Smith+Nephew has agreed to acquire Integrity Orthopaedics, a US-based developer of the Tendon Seam rotator cuff repair (RCR) system, for up to $450m. The acquisition is expected to strengthen Smith+Nephew’s shoulder repair portfolio and is part of the company’s plan to grow its presence in sports medicine, with a focus on RCR systems. It is anticipated to close before the end of January 2026.
FineHeart secures €83m to advance cardiac device development
ineHeart has raised €83m ($96.6m) in public and private financing towards advancing the development of its implantable cardiac output accelerator for advanced heart failure treatment. The French clinical stage company’s lead product in development is Flowmaker, a hybrid between a pacemaker and a cardiac assist device to restore normal contraction of the heart.
Gates Foundation and OpenAI forge $50m AI health partnership in Africa
The Gates Foundation and OpenAI are launching a $50m initiative to roll out artificial intelligence (AI) across countries in Africa to ease healthcare workforce shortages. The pilot, called Horizon1000, will help expand access to higher quality healthcare in developing nations, according to Bill Gates, who unveiled the partnership at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on 21 January.
