BioInteractions, the home of infection prevention

B

ioInteractions® is a leading global biomaterial technology company, responsible for creating and developing the revolutionary coating for medical devices TridAnt®, as well as the globally used Astute® and Assist™ solutions.

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), an estimated 300,000 patients a year in England acquire a Health Care Associated Infection (HCAI) after spending time in NHS care. NICE reports that HCAIs are estimated to cost the NHS approximately £1 billion a year1. These monetary values fail to incorporate the physical and mental health cost to patients and healthcare workers. HCAIs include a large number of well-known infections, caused by a wide-range of microorganisms such as meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), meticillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), Clostridium difficile (C.diff) and Escherichia coli (E. coli).

“HCAIs are a significant burden on our healthcare systems both in the UK and across the world,” explains Arjun Luthra, BioInteractions’ Commercial Director. “At BioInteractions, we understand the broad impact they have, and have developed a technology platform in TridAnt® to tackle these from a preventative standpoint. Anti-biotics, vaccines and other drugs help to treat bacterial infections, but they are limited in their overall impact. What is needed in the future is an antimicrobial solution that works alongside other measures to prevent the infection from taking hold long-term.”

TridAnt® is a non-leaching, highly effective, safe and durable antimicrobial coating for even the most sensitive medical devices and implants, helping to save lives and time needed for medical treatment. The TridAnt® technology is based on three decades of dedicated research and trials, the result of which is a fully medical device regulation compliant technology that has been independently tested to international standards (ISO, EN, PAS). It is the first known medical device technology to kill enveloped as well as non-enveloped viruses and gram-positive as well as gram-negative bacteria and prevents the formation of biofilms for long-periods of time of up to 365 days (as well as safe enough to protect skin for up to 48 hours) without any noticeable reduction in efficacy.

Overall, TridAnt® significantly reduces the infection risk associated with medical procedures and actively reduces the contamination of pathogens within a patient. It is an important addition to the arsenal available to medical professionals in the fight against life threatening infections and secondary complications when operating on patients. This enhances the well-being of a patient and allows more effective and efficient procedures for professionals.

The Astute® Antithrombogenic Coating has obtained clinical recognition for its safe and successful use on blood contacting medical devices. The active anti-thrombogenic components halts the blood clotting cascade mechanism. This is combined with passive non-thrombogenic elements to prevent deposition and adhesion on the device surface. The multi-action technology confronts clot formation on devices in a variety of ways with no rejection over long periods of time and under stressful conditions. This enhances the hemocompatibility and the durability of the device especially when utilised on long-term chronic blood contacting applications. The applications for Astute® incorporate a wide range of medical devices including catheters, oxygenator systems, dialysis systems, coronary stents, neurological and diagnostic devices. Overall, Astute® has not had any recalls for the 30+ years it has been in use.

Assist™ Hydrophilic Coating has delivered a high-performance lubricious surface for high-stress applications without particulate formation or delamination of the coating on devices approved both in the USA and Europe. The coating enhances biocompatibility of the surfaces whilst enabling the surface to significantly decrease the frictional resistance even under stress. This radically reduces tissue damage and improves comfort when delivering or removing devices from the patient. Assist™ is well suited to a wide range of medical applications, including highly movable and stressful components such as large balloon catheters and joint devices, tissue contacting devices such as urinary catheters and endotracheal tubes, as well as blood contacting devices, such as PTA catheters. The coating can be applied to wide range of substrates and is available as a fast heat curing and UV-curing process.
